Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: French septennat; German Septennat.
Etymology: In sense 1 < French septennat (1874 or earlier) < post-classical Latin septennis (see septennary adj.) + French -at -ate suffix1. In sense 2 < German Septennat (1874 in this sense; now historical) < post-classical Latin septennis (see septennary adj.) + German -at -ate suffix1.
1. A seven-year term of office. Originally applied to the term of office of the President of the French Republic.
