Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin septefolium , septifolium ; French sept , cinquefoil n., trefoil n.
Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin septefolium tormentil (4th cent.; also as septifolium (11th cent. or earlier)) < classical Latin septi- septi- comb. form1 + folium foil n.1, after ancient Greek ἑπτάϕυλλον (see heptaphyllous adj. at hepta- comb. form 3). Compare seven-leaf n. at seven adj. and n. Compounds 4, seven-leaves n. at seven adj. and n. Compounds 4. In β. forms re-formed < Middle French, French sept seven (see sept et le va n.) + -foil (in cinquefoil n., trefoil n.); the plant name does not have a parallel in French.

1. The plant tormentil, Potentilla erecta. In later use more widely: any of several plants of (or formerly included in) the genus Potentilla. Now rare.Now chiefly in lists of alternative names for these plants.A more common name for plants of this genus is cinquefoil.
