Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French septico-pyémie.
Etymology: < French septico-pyémie (P. Piorry 1848, in Bulletin de l'Academie Royale de Médecine 13 1382; 1849 in C. Sedillot De l'infection purulente ou pyoémie, the source reviewed in quot. 1849) < ancient Greek σηπτικός septic adj.1 (compare -o- connective) + French pyémie pyaemia n.
Medicine. Now somewhat rare.
Originally: †disease resulting from the (supposed) presence of both putrid matter and pus in the blood (obsolete). In later use: septicaemia (blood-borne infection) resulting in the formation of abscesses in locations distant from the primary site of infection.

1849 Brit. & Foreign Medico-chirurg. Rev. 4 356 It is rare to find the putrid elements acting uncombined with unaltered pus, and..the resulting phenomena are then of a complex character (septico-pyæmia).

1906 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 17 Nov. 1380/1 Leube in 1878 proposed for these the term cryptogenic septicopyaemia.
