Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin septimanarius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin septimanarius monk or canon assigned to duty for a week (6th cent.; < septimana week (see septimane n.) + classical Latin -ārius -ary suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare earlier hebdomadary n.
Roman Catholic Church. Obsolete. rare.
In a monastery, convent, etc.: a priest or nun who is charged with performing a particular office (such as presiding at the Eucharist) for a week at a time. Cf. hebdomadary n.The original (1655) edition of Fuller (quot. 1845) has the form septimarian (compare septimarian n.).
