Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek σηπτόν.
Etymology: < ancient Greek σηπτόν, neuter of σηπτός rotten, in Hellenistic Greek also putrefactive (see septic adj.1).Coined by S. L. Mitchill (see quot. 1795). Compare French septone (1797; < English).
Chemistry. Now historical and rare.
In the terminology of S. L. Mitchill: nitrogen.So called from its being regarded as the agent responsible for putrefaction.
