单词 seven-double
释义

seven-doubleadv.n.adj.

Forms: Middle English seven-double, Middle English sevenne-dowbell, 1500s seau'n-double, 1500s seuen-double, 1600s seauen-double.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: seven adj., double adv.; seven adj., double adj.1
Etymology: Partly (i) < seven adj. + double adv. Partly (ii) < seven adj. + double adj.1 Compare Swedish sjudubbel , Old Danish sjudubbel (Danish sjudubbel ). Compare also earlier sevenfold adv., sevenfold adj.Note on use as adjective. In quot. a1586 at sense C. with allusion to the shield said to have been wielded by the Greek mythological hero Ajax, which was made of seven layers of oxhide covered with bronze and allowed him to survive the Trojan Wars unscathed (compare sevenfold shield n.). Compare the following attestations of seven-doubled in a similar sense and context:1600 J. Weever Faunus & Melliflora sig. D3v And hauing pearc'd the soule's seuen-doubled shield, Loue makes the one vnto the other yeeld.1603 W. Lisle Nothing for New-yeares Gift sig. B3v Els nothing can recure sinnes festred wound, The soules seuen doubled shield it wil assaile.Possible evidence for later currency. It has been suggested that the Scots adjective sevendable , sevendible severe, extreme, attested from the early 19th cent. onwards, may reflect later currency of this word in an extended sense, althouɡh it has alternatively been interpreted as an alteration or derivative of solvendo adj. For further discussion see Sc. National Dict. at Sevendle.
