单词 sheldrake
释义

sheldraken.

Brit. /ˈʃɛldreɪk/, U.S. /ˈʃɛlˌdreɪk/
Forms: Middle English sheldedrake, selddrake, shelledrake, Middle English scheldrak, Middle English–1500s scheldrake, 1600s–1800s shell(-)drake, 1700s shel-drake, sheldrach, 1700s–1800s shieldrake, (1800s shield-drake), 1500s– sheldrake.
Etymology: probably < sheld adj. + drake n.2 A northern form skeldraik (see scaledrake n.) is recorded from 1600. Connection with shield n. is improbable, since ‘spot of colour’ is not an established sense of this word, as it is of the cognate German schild and Old Norse skjǫldr (compare skjǫldóttr dappled). The commonly cited Old Norse skjǫldungr, occurring in a late alliterative list of bird-names, is not identifiable (the Icelandic names of the sheldrake are brandgás and andakóngur). The form scheldrack given by Gesner (Anim. III. 131) is apparently < English.
A bird of the genus Tadorna of the duck tribe, frequenting sandy coasts in Europe, North Africa, and Asia, and remarkable for its bright and variegated colouring.†Occasionally applied to the North American canvas-back.
