Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sextanus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sextanus recurring every sixth day, counting inclusively (a1250 in a British source in febris sextana sextan fever) < classical Latin sextus sixth (see sext n.1) + -ānus -an suffix. Compare earlier quartan n., and also quintan n., etc.
Medicine. Now historical and rare.

A fever that recurs (by inclusive reckoning) every sixth day (i.e. on the first and sixth days of a six-day period).
