Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Spanish sextina; French sextine.
Etymology: Apparently originally < Spanish sextina (although this is first attested slightly later: a1609 or earlier), alteration of sestina (see sestina n.), after classical Latin sex six (see sex- comb. form); in later use < French sextine (1549 in Middle French), alteration of sestine sestine n., after classical Latin sex . Compare Portuguese sextina (1813). Compare earlier sestine n.
Prosody. Now rare.
