Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sextula.
Etymology: < classical Latin sextula sixth part of a Roman ounce (uncia ), sixth part of a Roman inch (uncia ) < sexta , use as noun (short for sexta pars sixth part) of feminine of sextus sixth (see sext n.1) + -ula -ula suffix.With the form sextule compare -ule suffix. Compare Old English sescle sixth part of a Roman ounce ( < classical Latin sextula, with ending remodelled after nouns in -le (see -el suffix1)):OE Byrhtferð Enchiridion (Ashm.) (1995) iii. iii. 182 Sextula siue sescle beoð feower scripuli , and byð þus amearcod.
Roman History.
1. A measure of weight, equal to one sixth of a Roman ounce (uncia), or about 4.5 grams; (also) a Roman coin of this weight, or (occasionally) one weighing two ounces and worth one sixth of an as (cf. sextant n. 1).
