Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin sexus , -ate suffix2.
Etymology: < classical Latin sexus (u -stem: see sex n.1) + -ate suffix2. Compare French sexué (1873). Compare slightly earlier sexuated adj. and sexed adj. 4, and earlier sexual adj. 2b.
Biology (chiefly Entomology).
Characterized by the existence of separate sexes, or by the capacity for sexual reproduction; = sexed adj. 4. Cf. sexual adj. 2b.
