Etymology: < Japanese shōjo (in e.g. shōjo manga ; compare manga n.2), (as simplex) young woman, girl (702 as seujo in legal use ‘young woman aged 17 to 20’; 1603 as xôgio in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam; < Middle Chinese elements meaning ‘young’ and ‘female person’; compare Chinese shàonǚ young woman). Compare shonen n.
1. attributive. Of or designating a genre of Japanese comics and animated films aimed primarily at a young female audience and typically characterized by an intense focus on personal (esp. romantic) relationships. Contrasted with shonen n. Frequently in shojo manga (cf. manga n.2).
