Etymology: < Maghribi Arabic šakšūka, ultimately of imitative origin (compare the related šakšaka to bubble, to sizzle, to be mixed up, to be beaten together). In β. forms via French chakchouka (1900 or earlier).In quot. 2017 via modern Hebrew šaqšūqa ( < Arabic).
Chiefly in North African or Israeli cookery: a dish consisting of eggs poached in a spicy sauce of tomatoes, vegetables, and (occasionally) meat.
