Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew šeli'aḥ.
Etymology: < Hebrew šeli'aḥ messenger, agent, delegate, deputy, in modern Hebrew also specifically denoting a person whose role is to encourage or support Judaism around the world or to encourage emigration to Israel < šālaḥ to send. Compare earlier shaliach tzibur n.In plural forms in -im after the Hebrew plural form. Compare the following considerably earlier example of the transliterated Hebrew noun in an English context:1609 H. Ainsworth Def. Holy Script, Worship & Ministerie 79 The Iewes..called him that was cheif ruler in their Synagogues, Sheliach tsibbur, that is the Legate or Messenger of the congregation; which name Sheliach the Rabbines use for Maleach an Angel.
