Etymology: < blanket n. + party n.Quot. 1845 at sense 1 may suggest a French model, but no likely French word or phrase has been identified. With sense 2 compare earlier the discipline of the blanket at blanket n. and adj. Phrases 1 and blanketing n. 2.
1. An outdoor party or gathering at which participants sit on blankets. In later use also (U.S. humorous and ironic): spec. such a party or gathering at which young couples engage in sexual activity. Now rare.Usage of the later specific sense is mainly confined to the mid 20th cent.
