Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish simkhe.
Etymology: < Yiddish simkhe < Hebrew śimḥāh celebration, act of rejoicing (the two senses are often difficult to distinguish) < śāmēaḥ joyful, glad.Compare the following earlier occurrence of the transliterated Hebrew noun in an English context in the general sense ‘rejoicing’:1649 J. Lightfoot Temple Service viii. 91 Peace offerings that were offered without bread with them; such were their offerings that were offered for their Hagigah and Simchah, or for their festivity and rejoycing at the three solemn festivals. In plural form simchot after the Hebrew plural form.
