单词 sime
释义

simen.

Brit. /sʌɪm/, U.S. /saɪm/
Forms: 1700s– syme, 1800s seyme, 1900s– sime.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Apparently the reflex of a borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic síma , sími , Norwegian sime , Old Swedish simi (Swedish regional simme ), Old Danish simæ , syme (Danish sime , now chiefly regional), all in the sense ‘rope’), cognate with Old Saxon sīmo rope, fetter ( > Old English sīma ), Old Frisian sīm , sīm rope, cord (West Frisian sim ), probably < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek ἱμάς leather strap, Early Irish sim kind of chain; compare also ( < the same base with different suffixation) sole n.3 See also simmon n.2Considerably earlier currency is implied by post-classical Latin sima, syma straw rope, truss of straw (late 13th cent. in British sources; apparently < Middle English). The Old English form simon (apparently dative plural) is attested once in Genesis B in the sense ‘fetter’, but probably represents a direct borrowing of a form of Old Saxon sīmo in the lost section of the poem's source, rather than showing evidence for currency of an English cognate:OE Genesis B 765 Sceolde he þa bradan ligas secan helle gehliðo, þær his hearra læg simon gesæled.
