单词 simia
释义

Simian.

Brit. /ˈsɪmɪə/, U.S. /ˈsɪmiə/
Inflections: Plural simiae.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sīmia.
Etymology: < classical Latin sīmia monkey, ape, in scientific Latin also former genus name ( Linnaeus Systema Naturae (1735)), probably ultimately < classical Latin sīmus or its etymon ancient Greek σῑμός snub-nosed, flat-nosed (see simous adj.), perhaps via a Greek form σιμίας, attested only as a proper name, as Σιμίας, Σιμμίας (compare -ίας, suffix forming nouns and adjectives). The following earlier quotation apparently shows an isolated borrowing of the classical Latin word:1660 E. Warcupp tr. F. Schottus Italy 177 Upon another Image of an Emperour triumphing drawn by four horses, stands a Simia [It. Scimia] an Ape cut in Æthiopick Marble in the form the Ægyptians used to worship it.
Zoology. Now historical and rare.
An ape or monkey, spec. any of those included in the (former) genus Simia (also with lower-case initial). Also: the (former) genus itself. The genus originally comprised all primates other than humans, one species of ape (probably the orangutan or chimpanzee), and lemurs, and was limited later to anthropoid apes and finally to the orangutan.
