Etymology: < post-classical Latin similitudinarius simulative, counterfeit (from 13th cent. in British sources), based on the principle of comparison or analogy (from 14th cent. in British sources), figurative (15th cent.) < classical Latin similitūdin- , similitūdō similitude n. + -ārius -ary suffix1.Compare Middle French similitudinaire counterfeit, feigned (late 15th cent.), analogous (a1506), Spanish similitudinario (early 15th cent.). In use as adverb partly after post-classical Latin similitudinarie (1363 in Chauliac: compare quot. ?a1425 at sense A. 1). In use as noun in sense B. after post-classical Latin similitudinaria, plural (1363 in Chauliac).
