Etymology: < (i) Ottoman Turkish semīd, semīẕ, simīd, simid, simit white bread (1525), ring-shaped bread roll made with fine flour (1593; Turkish simit), and in later use also (ii) its etymon Arabic samīd, samīḏ, (Egypt, Iraq) simīṭ white bread, fine flour, semolina, (later also, probably after Turkish) ring-shaped bread rolls collectively (corresponding to simīṭa as unit noun) < Aramaic smīḏ fine flour < Akkadian samīdu fine flour (see simnel n.).
