Etymology: late Old English scipere (= Middle Low German, Middle Dutch schipper , Middle High German, German schiffer , Old Norse skipari ), < ship n.1 + -er suffix1. In sense 2, representing Middle Low German, Middle Dutch schipper (see skipper n.2). In sense 3, < ship v.1 + -er suffix1.
