Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Ultimately < the same Germanic base as shit v. The attested Old English form shows a (jōn-stem) derivative formation from the zero-grade of this base, with doubling of the consonant caused by the stem-forming suffix; compare Middle Dutch schitte, schit faeces, filth (Dutch regional schit).The Older Scots forms scheitt, sheitte at Forms show open syllable lengthening of original short ĭ to long close ē . Earlier currency of forms with original long i (which are otherwise not securely attested before the 18th cent.: see shite n.) is perhaps implied by place names; however, the evidence is problematic. A place-name element s(c)hite- is occasionally attested: (a) in combination with words for ‘stream’ (perhaps in sense ‘sewer’; compare discussion at shitter n.), as Schitebroc , Shitebroc , Lincolnshire (1086; also Schytebroc (13th cent.); now Skidbrooke; the modern form shows Scandinavian influence on the initial consonant cluster, which could also explain the vowel quantity (if long) of the early forms), Schitewellemor , Warwickshire (1348; compare also Schetewellwey (1348); now Shutwell Farm); and (b) in combination with the element burh (see borough n.; perhaps (humorously) denoting the location of a public privy), as Schiteburglane , Schyteburghlane (street name), Romford, Essex (1272; 1366 as Schit(e)burne Lane ), Schitebur'lan' (street name), Oxford (c1290; 1362 as Shitebourne , Schitebarnlane ), Schiteburuelane (street name), London (1305; 1272–3 as Shitteborwelane , 1311 as Shitheburnlane ). However, the quantity of the stem vowel of s(c)hite- in these examples is uncertain: if short, it might represent an otherwise unattested Old English by-form *scite ( < the same base as shit n., probably showing an ōn -stem or an i -stem, hence without gemination of the consonant), which would not be inconsistent with the later forms of the place names. (The form Schetewellwey might hence show a reflex of *scite with Middle English open syllable lengthening.) Compare also Old English scitel , scytel dung, excrement, and scitol (adjective) that opens the bowels, laxative (both apparently < *scite (see above) + -el suffix1):eOE Bald's Leechbk. For the sake of euphemism the word is frequently written with asterisks, dashes, etc., to represent suppressed letters.
