Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymons: Hebrew šiṭṭāh, *šinṭāh.
Etymology: < Hebrew šiṭṭāh, probably variant (with assimilation of consonants) of an unattested form *šinṭāh, probably < ancient Egyptian šnḏt , šntt thorn tree, acacia (see sunt n.). Compare earlier shittim n.
Now historical.
In full shittah tree. The tree from which shittim wood was obtained (see shittim n. 1a), thought to be a kind of acacia, probably Acacia seyal, chiefly found in northern Africa.
