Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: shock n.3, troop n.
Etymology: < shock n.3 + troop n., after French troupe de choc (1862 in an English linguistic context, or earlier) and subsequently also German Stosstrupp (end of the 19th cent., itself after French).

a. Troops specially trained and equipped for carrying out sudden assaults, esp. against enemy strongholds. Cf. assault troops at assault n. Compounds 1, storm troop n. 1a.
