Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: black adj., bottom n.
Etymology: < black adj. + bottom n. In sense 2, probably originally with reference to areas so named on account of the dark colour of their soil (i.e. sense 1), but later interpreted as referring to their predominantly black population. In sense 3 perhaps with allusion to sense 2.
