β. 1900s– shao mai, 1900s– shaomai.

Etymology: Apparently partly < Chinese (Cantonese) sīu-máai ( < sīu to cook + máai to sell; apparently with reference to the dish being freshly prepared for sale), and partly (in β. forms) < its Mandarin equivalent shāomài.
In East Asian cookery: a snack consisting of small steamed dumplings, typically stuffed with meat or seafood and vegetables.
