Etymology: < French sillomètre instrument for measuring the speed of a ship (1750 or earlier; 1840 with reference to Clément's invention: compare quot. 1841) < sill- (in sillage ship's wake (15th cent. in Middle French as seillage ), ship's speed (1679)) + -o- -o- connective + -mètre -meter comb. form².Middle French seillage (French sillage ) derives < seiller (of a ship) to make way (1484; French siller , now rare) or its etymon, the base of seillon furrow (see selion n.) + -age -age suffix. It has been suggested that Middle French seiller shows a transferred use of Old French silier to plough (1322), but the latter is apparently not attested in the Middle French period, and it is equally possible that the two verbs were formed independently from the same base.

1857 Civil Engineer & Architect's Jrnl. 20 197/1 This invention, in its simplest state, is called the sillometer, and visibly indicates, with mathematical accuracy, the speed of a ship in its smallest variations.

1869 U.S. Patent 93,513 1/1 Be it known that I, Armand Banare, of Paris, France, have invented a new and improved Atmospheric Sillometer.
