Etymology: Latin, lit. ‘yes and no’, the title of a work by Peter Abelard, 12th-cent. French theologian and philosopher.
A method of theological argument used by Abelard and later Scholastics, in which contradictory passages of scripture are presented without commentary, in order to stimulate readers to resolve the contradictions themselves. Frequently attributive. Also transferred.
