单词 simon
释义

Simonn.

Forms: Middle English Symon, Middle English Symond, Middle English Symound, Middle English 1600s–1800s Simon. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Simon.
Etymology: < the male forename Simon < Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French Simon (French Simon ) and its etymon post-classical Latin Simon (Vulgate) < Hellenistic Greek Σιμων (also Συμεών ) < Hebrew Šimʿōn ( < šāmaʿ to hear, to listen; compare Shema n.), the name of several people in the New Testament, e.g. the apostles Simon Peter (see Peter n.) and Simon the Zealot (see zealot n.), the priest Simeon (Luke 2:25–35), and Simon Magus (see simony n.).Early use of the male forename. The male forename Simon is attested in British sources from the Old English period; it is frequent from the 13th cent. Specific senses. In sense 1 with allusion to Simon Magus; see simony n. and compare discussion at that entry. With sense 2b compare later simoleon n. Although this use probably represents a semantic development of the earlier British sense, perhaps compare the dollar-mark $ , which resembles the letter S . With sense 3 compare slightly later Simon Says n.
Obsolete.
1. The sin of simony personified. Also (and earliest) in phrases, as to follow Simon at heels, to sup with Simon: to practise simony. With reference to Simon Magus; see the etymology at simony n.
