Etymology: < Middle French simoniaque simoniac n., with remodelling of the ending after nouns in -acle , e.g. demoniacle n., obstacle n. Compare earlier simoniac n. and slightly later simoniacal adj. Compare also simoniacre adj.Compare Middle French simoniacle (1549 in an apparently isolated attestation).
Obsolete. rare.
A person who practises or has practised simony; a buyer or seller of ecclesiastical or spiritual benefits, especially preferment or office in the church; = simoniac n.
