Etymology: < post-classical Latin significatorius serving to signify (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < classical Latin significāt- , past participial stem of significāre signify v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2.With letters significatorie (see quot. 1579 at sense A.; compare also significatory epistle in quot. 1663 at sense A.) compare post-classical Latin littere significatorie, plural (1312 in a British source).
