Etymology: Apparently irregularly < post-classical Latin Sina-, stem of Sīnae (plural), denoting the inhabitants of East Asia (see Sinaean adj.) + -ic suffix, after French sinique Sinic adj.; perhaps influenced by other adjectives ending in -aic , designating peoples (e.g. Judaic adj., Altaic adj.). Compare earlier Sinic adj.With quot. 1872 compare quot. 1893 at Sinaean adj., also translating French sinique in a different passage of the same work. N.E.D. (1911) gives the pronunciation as (səinē·ik) /seɪˈneɪɪk/.
