Origin: A borrowing from Zulu. Etymon: Zulu -bansela.
Etymology: < Zulu -bansela (verb stem) to express thanks in tangible form (perhaps < -bansa to be additional, to give + -ela, suffix forming the applied form); compare umbanselo small gift.
South African.
A gratuity, bonus, or reward; a gift, esp. one given in acknowledgement or anticipation of service, or requested as a gesture of goodwill; a bribe. Cf. pasella n.
