Etymology: < French sidéraphtite, sidéraphthite (both 1877 in sources recording a patent application made in 1876) < ancient Greek σίδηρος iron (see sidero- comb. form¹) + ἄϕθιτος undecaying (see aphthitalite n.) + -ite -ite suffix¹; compare French aphtite, aphthite, the name of a gold-coloured copper alloy patented by the same applicant (both also 1877 in sources recording a patent application made in 1876).French aphtite, aphthite was also borrowed into English; compare:1879 Furniture Gaz. 2 Aug. 73/3 An alloy is thus produced..to which may be applied the name of ‘aphthite’, or unalterable.

1877 Chem. News 27 Apr. 188/2 Sideraphthite is the name given to a new alloy composed of 66 parts of iron, 23 of nickel, 4 of tungsten, 5 of aluminium, and 5 of copper. It is said to resist sulphuretted hydrogen and the vegetable acids.

1884 C. G. W. Lock Workshop Receipts 3rd Ser. 39/1 A new alloy, which resembles silver, and is very ductile and malleable... The metal is called ‘sideraphthite’.
