Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French silentiaire; Greek σιλεντιάριος.
Etymology: Partly (i) < French silentiaire person who observes or recommends silence (1611 in Cotgrave; compare quot. 1611; 1567 in Middle French as adjective in the sense ‘habitually silent, taciturn’), and partly (ii) < Byzantine Greek σιλεντιάριος officer at the Byzantine court, both < post-classical Latin silentiarius officer at the Byzantine court (4th cent.) < classical Latin silentium silence n. + -ārius -ary suffix1.
Now historical.
1. A person who observes silence, or advocates the observance of silence, esp. as a religious discipline. Obsolete.
