Etymology: < German Siderodromophobie ( J. Rigler Ueber die Folgen der Verletzungen auf Eisenbahnen (1879) 119; < modern Greek σιδηρόδρομος railway ( < ancient Greek σιδηρο- sidero- comb. form1 + δρόμος course, way: see -drome comb. form) + German phobie -phobia comb. form), with alteration of the ending after -phobia comb. form.
Originally: = railway spine n. at railway n. Compounds 2. In later use also: irrational fear of railways or railway travel.

1879 Med. Times & Gaz. 26 Apr. 462/1 This mental condition he [sc. J. Rigler] names ‘Siderodromophobia’ [Ger. Siderodromophobie], and defines it as ‘a more or less intense spinal irritation, coupled with a hysterical condition and a morbid disinclination for work, which, as the result of shock, occurs among railway employés, who, in consequence of their occupation, are specially predisposed to it’.

2005 H. Harbers Inside Politics Technol. 149 Siderodromophobia was one of the more exotic variants, referring to the general disorientation..that seems to have affected the first rail passengers.
