单词 sidonian
释义

Sidoniann.adj.

Brit. /sʌɪˈdəʊnɪən/, U.S. /saɪˈdoʊniən/
Forms: 1500s–1600s Sidonien, 1500s–1600s Sydonian, 1500s– Sidonian, 1600s Sydonien, 1600s Zidonian.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Sīdonius , Sīdōnius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Sīdonius (also Sīdōnius) (adjective) of or belonging to Sidon, (noun) native or inhabitant of Sidon ( < ancient Greek Σιδόνιος (also Σιδώνιος) (adjective) of or belonging to Sidon, (noun) native or inhabitant of Sidon < Σιδών (Phoenician ṣdn (probably Ṣīdōn), Hebrew Ṣīdōn), the name of a Phoenician city in the south of present-day Lebanon + -ιος, suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix. The usual spelling in the King James Bible, Zidonian , reflects a transliteration of the Hebrew name of the city. The Wycliffite versions of the Bible use Sidonees (and variants). In Deuteronomy 3:9, Coverdale has Sidons . Compare Old English Sidonisc (adjective) Sidonian (also as noun) ( < Sidon , the name of the city + -ish suffix1).
A. n.
A native or inhabitant of ancient or modern Sidon, a city in the south of present-day Lebanon.
