Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: black adj., hand n.
Etymology: < black adj. + hand n. In sense 1 after Spanish Mano Negra (1883 or earlier in this sense). In sense 2 after Italian Mano Nera (although this is first attested slightly later in this sense: 1905 or earlier; 1884 or earlier in sense 1). In sense 3 after Serbian and Croatian Crna ruka (although this is first attested slightly later in this sense: 1913 or earlier).
1. A Spanish society of revolutionary anarchists active in the late 19th cent. Frequently attributive. Now historical.There is doubt as to whether such a society actually existed, or was merely the invention of government authorities.

1883 Galveston (Texas) Daily News 2 Mar. A band of masked and armed men, supposed to belong to the Black Hand entered a farm at Puerto Serrano, Andalusia, murdered the men, outraged the women and destroyed everything.
