The later semantic development is influenced by simplify v.Compare Spanish simplificación (early 17th cent.), Italian semplificazione (late 17th cent. as simplificazione).
1. In spiritual and religious contexts: the action or fact of being brought or reduced to a state of simplicity, unity, or purity; purification by means of this. Cf. simplify v. 1. Obsolete.
