Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Norn. Partly formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: skreed v.
Etymology: Partly (i) < the unattested Norn cognate of Old Icelandic skreið shoal, flock, Faroese skreið shoal of cod, Norwegian skrei , (regional) skreid flock, host, swarm, spawning cod, Swedish regional skrej spawning cod ( < an ablaut variant (o -grade) of the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic skríða : see skreed v.); and partly (ii) directly < skreed v.Compare Orkney Scots skro , in the same sense (1929; compare quot. 1988; of uncertain origin).
Scottish (chiefly Shetland, Orkney, and Caithness).
A large or dense mass of small animals, esp. vermin; a swarm. In extended use: a large or dense group of people or things. Cf. screed n.1 6.

Etymology: < the unattested Norn reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic skríða to creep, crawl (see scrithe v. and compare the Scandinavian forms cited at that entry).The vocalism of the β. forms apparently shows a more anglicized pronunciation (compare rive v.1).
Scottish (Shetland, Orkney, and Caithness).
intransitive. Of vermin: to crowd together in large numbers; to swarm, to teem. Also (of a person, place, etc.): to teem or crawl with vermin. In extended use, of (esp. undesirable) people: to be present in large numbers.
