Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: English regional slag , -er suffix5.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < English regional slag (see note: probably a variant of slack v.) + -er suffix5. Compare earlier stagger v. and also lagger v.English regional slag is recorded in the meanings: (Northamptonshire) to loosen, to make slack (1851 or earlier), (Bedfordshire) to idle, to lag, (Worcestershire) to cause to go slowly (both 1904 or earlier). Compare also English regional (Devon) slagged loose, untidy (1839 or earlier, also as slaggert ). The spelling slagur in quot. 1809 shows a phonetic transcription in a system devised by the editor.
English regional (western, Bedfordshire, and Kent) in later use.
