Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Origin uncertain, perhaps imitative of the distinctive guitar sound typical of this music.Compare Ska-Ba, the title of an instrumental track in this style by saxophonist Tommy McCook, released in 1963. Compare also the name of the influential Jamaican band Skatalites , formed in 1964. Perhaps compare scat n.6, which may show a similar imitative formation.
A style of popular music of Jamaican origin, characterized by a fast tempo and strongly accentuated offbeat. Also: a dance to such music. Cf. reggae n., rocksteady n.Ska was a precursor to rocksteady and reggae.
