Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French blasto-; Greek βλαστο-.
Etymology: < French blasto- (in e.g. blastocarpe blastocarpous adj. ) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek βλαστο-, combining form (in e.g. βλαστοκοπεῖν to cut off young shoots) of ancient Greek βλαστός sprout, germ ( < the stem of βλαστάνειν to bud, sprout, grow, of unknown origin); compare -o- connective. Compare blast n.2, -blast comb. form.First attested in borrowings from French, from the early 19th cent., e.g. blastophore n. Formations within English are found from the mid 19th cent. Compare scientific Latin blasto- (formations in which are found from the early 19th cent.), German blasto- (formations in which are found from the second half of the 19th cent.).
