Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Sinicus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Sinicus (mid 16th cent. or earlier) < Sinae (plural), denoting the inhabitants of China and of East Asia more widely (see Sinaean adj.) + -icus -ic suffix. Compare French sinique (1572 or earlier in Middle French). Compare slightly earlier Sinaean adj. Compare also earlier Seric adj.
Chinese. In later use also with wider reference to East Asian peoples (cf. Sinesian adj., Sinetic adj., Sinitic adj. 1).
