Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Sinico-.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin Sinico-, combining form (in e.g. Sinico-Japonicus Sinico-Japanese adj.) of Sinicus Sinic adj.; compare -o- connective. Compare French Sinico- . Compare Sino- comb. form¹ (later in formations of these kinds).Formations in English are found from the first half of the 19th cent. (earliest in Sinico-Japanese adj.). Formations in French are found from the second half of the 18th cent. (in e.g. Sinico-Tartare (1761 or earlier)). In Sinico-Annamitic at sense 2 after post-classical Latin Sinico-Anamiticus, Sinico-Annamiticus (1838 in the work discussed in quot. 1838); compare Annamite adj.

Forming adjectives with the sense ‘Chinese and ——; of, belonging to, or involving both China and (the specified country or people)’, as in Sinico-French, Sinico-Indian, etc.Recorded earliest and most commonly in Sinico-Japanese adj. 1.Sino- is now the usual prefix in this context: see Sino- comb. form¹ 1b. Cf. Chino- comb. form¹.
