Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. sinistromanual Brit. /ˌsɪnᵻstrə(ʊ)ˈmanjʊəl/, /ˌsɪnᵻstrə(ʊ)ˈmanjᵿl/, U.S. /ˌsɪnəstroʊˈmænj(əw)əl/.
Forms: before a vowel usually sinistr-.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin sinistr- , sinister , -o- connective.
Etymology: < classical Latin sinistr-, stem of sinister sinister adj. + -o- connective.Formations are found from the early 19th cent. In sinistroposition and sinistro-version (compare quots. 1883 and 1908 at sense 1) after German Sinistroposition and Sinistroversion (both 1873). With sinistrogyric at sense 1 compare French sinistrogyre (1839 or earlier).
