Origin: A borrowing from Okanagan. Etymon: Okanagan snʕickstx.
Etymology: Ultimately < Okanagan snʕickstx (also written sngaytskstx), lit. ‘person of the place of the bull trout’, apparently with reference to the name of a location on the Arrow Lakes, British Columbia. The final syllable in the α. forms reflects the pronunciation of the Okanagan element -x (denoting a person), as a velar fricative (/x/), which is almost syllabic in this position. Compare also Sinaikst, denoting an archaeological period in the same region (1978 or earlier), although it is unclear whether this has been named after the people or after a place with this name.
