Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is usually maintained on the first syllable, e.g. skeletotrophic adj. Brit. /ˌskɛlᵻtə(ʊ)ˈtrɒfɪk/, /ˌskɛlᵻtə(ʊ)ˈtrəʊfɪk/, U.S. /ˌskɛlədəˈtrɑfɪk/.
combining form of Greek σκελετός, -όν, used in a few scientific terms as skeleˈtogenous adj. producing, or helping to form, a skeleton. skeleˈtography n., skeleˈtology n., ˌskeletoˈtrophic adj. (see quots.).
