Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French sissonne.
Etymology: < French sissone, (now usually) sissonne (although this is apparently first attested slightly later than in English: 1710 or earlier; a1686 in the fuller form pas de sissonne) < the name of François César de Roussy, comte de Sissonne (fl. late 17th cent.), to whom the invention of this ballet step is attributed.
Ballet.
A jump into the air from which a dancer lands on one foot with the other leg extended to the back, front, or side.
