Originally and frequently attributive, esp. in Black Sash Movement.Originally known officially as the Women's Defence of the Constitution League, the Black Sash was founded in 1955. It protested against the injustices of apartheid, while also providing legal and administrative aid to disadvantaged sectors of society through a network of advice centres. In the post-apartheid era its general membership was disbanded, but the organization has maintained its advice centres, and continues to serve as a human rights watchdog.
